Louis van Gaal Open to Netherlands Return After Cancer Recovery

Former Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal has expressed his willingness to return as head coach of the Netherlands following Ronald Koeman’s departure after the Dutch national team’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The 74-year-old has been out of coaching since leading the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup, a period during which he battled prostate cancer. Now fully recovered, Van Gaal is ready to step back into international management if the opportunity arises.

Van Gaal Ready for Fourth Netherlands Spell

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Van Gaal has made himself available for the Netherlands job. If appointed, it would mark his fourth spell in charge of the Oranje.

His chances appear promising, with several leading Dutch coaches unlikely to be available. Arne Slot is reportedly committed to continuing in club football, while Peter Bosz remains with PSV Eindhoven and Erik ten Hag is also tied to his current club.

Van Gaal, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022, confirmed that his health is no longer an issue.

Although the Dutch Football Association has not yet contacted the experienced manager, reports suggest his name remains under consideration as they begin the search for Koeman’s successor.
