Fermín López has finally made his long-awaited return to pre-season action after recovering from the fractured fifth metatarsal that ruled him out of the World Cup.
The Barcelona midfielder featured in the club’s triangular tournament in Udine, where the Catalans defeated Nottingham Forest before suffering a defeat against hosts Udinese. After the matches, Fermín spoke to the media about several key topics surrounding Barcelona.
Fermín Reacts to Araujo’s Departure
One of the main subjects was Ronald Araujo’s expected departure, with the Barcelona captain closing in on a loan move to Liverpool.
Fermín admitted that he was disappointed to see his teammate and captain leave, while also wishing him the best for the future.
“He has come to say goodbye. It’s a shame, because he’s a captain and I have a good relationship with him. He has decided to continue growing and hopefully he will return next season,” said Fermín.
Cautious on Ferran Torres and Rodri
Fermín was also questioned about Ferran Torres’ future and Barcelona’s reported interest in Rodri, but the midfielder was careful not to speculate without having enough information.
Regarding Ferran’s possible exit, Fermín said: “I don’t want to go into that, because I don’t have the necessary information. He is a good companion and a friend; I hope he decides what’s best for him.”
He maintained a similarly cautious position when asked about Rodri, who has reportedly chosen Barcelona after his MVP-winning World Cup.
“Rodri is a great player, but he is not at the club. Whatever Deco and the sporting management decide will be fine and, if it has to happen, it will happen,” he added.
Fermín Gives Fitness Update
Fermín, who won a decisive penalty against Nottingham Forest before being rested for the game against Udinese, admitted that he is still working towards full match sharpness after a difficult summer.
“Good. I still have to get into the rhythm, but I felt good. I wanted to play. It’s been a very hard summer, but I’m already well and looking forward to this season,” he said.
With his injury now behind him, Fermín will be hoping to build his fitness and play an important role for Barcelona during the new campaign.
