Schalke 04 have officially announced a high-profile pre-season friendly against Real Madrid to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Veltins-Arena.

The German club will welcome the 15-time European champions to Gelsenkirchen on 16 August, with the match serving as Schalke’s final preparation before their DFB-Pokal first-round clash against Hallescher FC.

Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann expressed his excitement about the occasion, highlighting the significance of welcoming one of world football’s biggest clubs.

“We’re really looking forward to playing our final pre-season friendly against such a top-class opponent. We also know that Schalke fans can’t wait to see such a blockbuster friendly at the Veltins-Arena,” Baumann said.

A Rivalry with Champions League History

Although this will be a friendly encounter, Schalke and Real Madrid have shared memorable UEFA Champions League battles in the past.

The clubs met in the Round of 16 during the 2013/14 season, where Real Madrid cruised to a 9-2 aggregate victory on their way to lifting the Champions League trophy. They faced each other again a year later, with Los Blancos narrowly progressing 5-4 on aggregate after another thrilling knockout tie.

Legends Who Represented Both Clubs

Several notable players have worn the colours of both Schalke and Real Madrid over the years.

Spanish legend Raúl enjoyed a successful spell in Gelsenkirchen after leaving Madrid, scoring 40 goals in 98 appearances for Schalke. Former Germany international Mesut Özil also began his professional career with Schalke before moving to Werder Bremen and eventually joining Real Madrid.
